PretendPint

Which beers sold as foreign are brewed in Britain, and what to buy instead

Work in progress. We are still reading cans and settling where listings disagree. Seen a beer whose small print contradicts its label? Tell us.

About PretendPint

PretendPint is written, checked and kept up to date by Mark Porter, one person in the United Kingdom. Which beers sold as foreign are brewed in Britain, and what to buy instead.

Who is behind it

Mark Porter is a marketing consultant based in Berkshire. PretendPint started after Mark Porter got fed up with supermarket lager dressed as Spanish, Italian or Mexican that turns out to be brewed in Britain when you read the small print on the can. The site began in September 2026 and now covers 40 beers sold as foreign and brewed here, and every other beer checked alongside them.

The view the site is built on is that brewing a foreign brand under licence is legal and has been normal since the 1970s, and that the question is disclosure: you are entitled to know where the beer in your hand was made before you pay for it. The site never uses the word fake, and it does not tell anyone what to drink.
